New NMC Registration Process for Overseas Nurses

New NMC Registration Process for Overseas Nurses

London, October 2014 - Post the review and consultation conducted by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) in February 2014, the new NMC registration process for overseas nurses i.e. outside the EU/EEA has been introduced in October 2014. The new NMC registration process will be supported by an online application process and a two-part competence test. All applications that were received before October 2014 will be required to complete the Overseas Nursing Program (ONP) within 2 years of the date of the decision letter from the NMC.

The Non-EU/EEA Nurses need to fulfil the following eligibility criteria before completing the online application process:

  • IELTS 7.0 (academic) or above in all sections.
  • Successful completion of a 3 years (or equivalent) undergraduate education and training programme.
  • 12 months post-registration practical experience.

With the new application process, all Non-EU/EEA nurses will be able to prepare for the competence test in their own country before relocating to the UK. Below is the new registration process applicable from October 2014:

  • Complete online registration with the NMC.
  • Sit for a computer-based test at the nearest global centre.
  • Sit for the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) at the University of Northampton, UK.
  • Present documentation to the NMC i.e. identification, university transcripts and IELTS certificates to further process the application.

The assessment for all Non-EU/EEA educated nurses will be done in the same manner against the standards for pre-registration Nursing Education.
