Acute Shortage of Nurses in UK

  • Britain’s healthcare industry is suffering from a shortage of 24,000 nurses according to the current 2016 statistics. This shortage is predicted to grow further for some more years. Therefore, the Nursing Workforce has been added to the UK Government's Shortage Occupation List, on an interim basis.
  • The inclusion of nurses in the Shortage Occupation List and the introduction of the Brexit means that nurses from outside the European Economic Area, who are applying to work in the UK will have their applications for nursing posts prioritized.
  • Nurses can be granted unlimited numbers of standard visas, as long as they have the support of a UK employer.
  • There is an estimated vacancy of 9.4% Nursing and Midwifery posts in England.
  • 14,000 Non- EU nurses are expected to be working in the UK by 2020.
