Working as a Nurse in Ireland –What You Need?

Do you wish to work as a nurse in Ireland? Many nurses dream to be a global nurse with a thriving career. Ireland offers various job and career opportunities for internationally educated nurses. If you are an aspirant, then here are a few things that you need to know.

Education Requirement

The candidate needs to mention the detail of training in their respective nursing fields. In this, they have to mention –

  • The name of the training program
  • Start and the finish dates
  • Total theoretical hours and content
  • Clinical practice hours and the area of practice

It is necessary for the candidate to complete both the sides of Form A and get it duly signed and dated with an official stamp. However, the candidate is required to provide a genuine explanation stating the reason behind the gap of six months or more between the date of program completion and the date of registration.

Employment Reference Requirement 

  • The employment reference should be from the current employer, where the candidate is practicing. If the current employer has less than twelve months experience, then a second reference is mandatory from the previous employer.
  • It is important to get the reference signed by the Director of Nursing /Midwifery or the Matron of the Nurse/Midwifery Manager. In case this is not possible, the candidate should provide an explanation and attach it to Form B.
  • In a special case, a reference signed by the Human Resource Department or Doctor (Head of Department) is also accepted. However, the doctor apart from employed as the department head should have the nurse or midwife working in the same section.

Certificates/ Credentials Required

  • Candidate must have current registration in another jurisdiction.
  • In case of registration in other countries/states or jurisdictions, you will need a certificate of Current Professional Status.
  • If you have work experience in other countries/states or jurisdictions, again you will need a certificate of Current Professional Status.
  • You will need to provide an explanation if you have a gap of six months or more between completion of date of program &date of registration.

Language Requirement

The candidate must have passed the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic test with an overall band score of 7.0.

  • Application form with the latest photograph
  • Certified copy of birth certificate
  • Marriage/Divorce certificate/deed poll
  • Employment reference Form B
  • Proof of the Language competence Form D
  • Certified copy of the passport
  • Certificate of current professional status Form C
  • Transcript of training Form A Main Program
  • Transcript of training for nursing/midwifery Programs (if you desire to register)
